frida the label

The weather in Brisbane is definitely heating up, and we've found the perfect Spring/Summer uniform - Frida the Label!

Introduce yourselves!
Our friendship sprung in year one in the school yard! We bonded over the fact that we were both born in New Zealand and have been the best and worst of friends since then.

What sparked the birth of Frida the Label?
A love of clothes and how expressive they are - fashion is an art form really!  People always say how superficial the industry is because it's all appearance based.  But the messages and inspirations behind a lot of collections are actually really powerful! Anyway, we both felt that we couldn't find some of the things we wanted to wear here in Brisbane so we decided to make them ourselves, and then turned that into a brand.

What were your inspirations for Capricornia?
It is named after the Tropic of Capricorn which is a line of latitude south of the equator.  So it's inspired by a place rather than an era or a style.  The regions that lie along the Tropic of Capricorn are hot and humid.  We imagined suburban life in these areas as being kind of lazy and monotonous, especially in the heat of the summer.  It's kind of a subtle, house glamour.  The pieces are perfect for lounging by the pool or lying under a cool fan.  You can kind of picture the scene… A bed, the stale buzz of the television, the sticky sweat.  It's almost has a 60s vibe to it!

What is your advice for young designers like yourself?
If you know what you want then go out and get it.  Don't make excuses and don't let anybody hold you back.  The possibilities are limitless.  You get what you work for.
